Two second-half goals were enough for Colombia to see off the Ivory Coast on Wednesday at the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in the Brazilian capital. One set piece and a counterattack broke down an Ivorian defense that looked vulnerable all match.

After a scoreless first half in which Colombia had the better of the chances, James Rodriguez struck in the 64th minute. The Monaco attacker surprisingly out-jumped substitute Didier Drogba to connect for a powerful header.

Six minutes later an Ivory Coast giveaway in midfield sparked a Colombia counterattack. Youngster Juan Fernando Quintero slotted home on the break to score his first international goal.

The 74th minute effort from Gervinho - created by an excellent run from the left wing that beat three defenders - cut Colombia's lead to one. But the Ivorians were unable to find an equalizer.

It finished 2-1 to Colombia, giving coach Jose Pekerman's side six points in Group C heading into their final match of the first round. The tournament is not yet over for the Ivory Coast, however, who meet Greece in their third and last group match.

Japan face Greece in the day's final tournament action.
