A UN conference on climate change began in Bonn on Monday. Nearly 2,000 delegates are taking part in the negotiations aimed at preparing a framework for combating global warming ahead of the Copenhagen summit in December.

They will discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help countries most exposed to the effects of climate change.

The executive secretary of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, Yvo de Boer, said last week that rich countries had a moral obligation to put a brake on climate change.

He added that emerging economies such as India, China and Brazil also needed to commit to the environment.
