Can national parks and other protected areas succeed in their mission to preserve the variety of life on Earth? Not unless much more attention is given to the impacts of climate change, a major conservation conference in Brazil was warned last week. The Brazilian Protected Areas Congress was told that many species may be unable to adapt to rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns, because their remaining habitats are surrounded by intensive agriculture or urban development. Some scientists believe we need to rethink the whole concept of protected areas. Living Planet visits Iguacu National Park on the border between Brazil and Argentina.
