Hundreds of Uyghur scholars, historians, artists, writers, poets and musicologists in China have disappeared, according to the US-based Uyghur Human Rights Project. The absence of these cultural stewards has been painfully felt by the Uighur community in Xinjiang and the overseas diaspora.
