Nicaragua has started work on a 50 billion dollar canal to link the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The canal - which is expected to be both longer and wider than the Panama Canal - is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. It will speed up shipping times for supertankers and facilitate trade between Europe and Asia. But the canal may also cause serious environmental harm.
