Bundesliga: Dortmund go top after win in Ingolstadt

Jonathan HardingAugust 23, 2015

In the searing Sunday sun, Borussia Dortmund travelled to Ingolstadt looking to continue their winning form - without the drama of their Europa League game against Odds. It took a while, but they got there in the end.

After a first half of missed chances, Dortmund took a hatful in the second half to beat Ingolstadt in the host's first ever home game in the Bundesliga and sit top of the table at the end of matchday two. Matthias Ginter's first ever goal in Dortmund colors proved an unlikely breakthrough, but a Marco Reus penalty - Shinji Kagawa's third of the season - and a late close-range effort from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added some gloss to the scoreline.

After a slow start that included a rare Marco Reus miss, Dortmund began to create numerous chances, but, as is becoming an undesired habit of theirs, BVB failed to convert their opportunities. Ilkay Gündogan went on a run, controlling the play like the Gündogan of old, only for his squared ball to narrowly miss the outstretched leg of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabon striker saw a couple of efforts blocked before Reus flashed a shot wide of the far post. Then it was Shinji Kagawa's turn to not finish off a lovely team move.

With half an hour gone and both sides frustrated, the tackles began to increase in severity and the yellow cards started to fly. Five minutes before half time, five yellow cards had been shown. Roman Bürki was only once called into action in the first half, rushing out to clear a long ball ahead of Lukas Hinterseer, and the Dortmund keeper, like most Dortmund fans, will have been wondering how the visitors weren't ahead at the break.

Second-half breakthrough

Three minutes after the restart, though, it was Bürki who stopped the hosts from making matters worse for Ingolstadt. Moritz Hartmann hit a first-time shot across goal from the right after a cheeky back heel from Alfredo Morales, but Bürki made a strong dive to his right to deny him.

With the game heading in an all too familiar direction for Dortmund, an unlikely hero stepped forward to sweep BVB into the lead in unusually comfortably manner. Henrik Mkhitayan found an overlapping Ginter (started at right back) who cut inside before curling neatly into the far corner to break the deadlock. Ginter's goal broke Ingolstadt's resistance and rhythm. Minutes later, Reus converted from the spot after a foul in the area on Marcel Schmelzer, to score both the second of the game and his second of the season.

15 seconds after coming on as a substitute, Stefan Lex hit a half-volley that stung the palms of Bürki from the edge of the area, as Ingolstadt sought an instant response. They couldn't find one, though, as Dortmund kept control. Aubameyang nearly added a third, but newly-signed keeper Örjan Nyland denied him, and later Reus and Mats Hummels as well. Inside the final ten minutes, Shinji Kagawa added a third, firing home inside the box to wrong foot Nyland. Aubameyang added a fourth after a Ginter cross confused the Ingolstadt defence and the Gabon striker was able to poke home from close range.

Kagawa's goal sent Dortmund top of the table for the first time since matchday seven of the 2013/14 Bundesliga season, as Thomas Tuchel's charges have won both of their first two games this season 4-0.
