Bulgaria: Beefing up the border

It's only three meters high and 30 kilometers long, but the new barbed wire fence along the Bulgarian-Turkish border reveals a lot about relations between the European Union and the oft-tumultuous neighboring regions. Sofia hopes the new barrier will prevent refugees, most of them Syrians fleeing from civil war, from entering the country. Those who do make it across the border often find themselves housed in Bulgarian refugee camps, which are known for their poor conditions.
