#German chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed Aung San Suu Kyi's release. She called the Nobel Peace laureate "a symbolic figure for the global non-violent struggle for human rights." Merkel appealed to Burma's military rulers, to release the remaining 2,000 political prisoners. Few observers expect that to happen anytime soon though.
