Voting is underway in the German state of Bavaria, where conservatives could lose their absolute majority for the first time in nearly half a century and weaken German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Even if the Christian Social Union retains power in the state assembly, such a slump in support would be a setback for Merkel - who relies on the party for her coalition government in Berlin.
