Jimmy Walker sunk a tense 3-foot putt at the end to secure a one shot lead over world number one and defending champion Jason Day on Sunday.

Day and Walker were neck-to-neck down the back nine at rain-soaked Baltusrol in the US state of New Jersey, where both were forced to play 36 holes after bad weather the previous day.

Walker was helped along by birdies at the 10th, 11th and the 17th hole, finishing three-under par 67 in the final round to stand on 14-under par 266.

"It was a battle all day," said Walker after winning the $1.8-million (1.6 million euros) prize and the Wanamaker Trophy.

Australian Day applied late pressure on Walker, but a 14-foot eagle putt at the par-five last hole for a 67 still left him short of the title.
