A sensational find
German tax investigators have found 1,285 unframed and 121 framed pictures in a Munich apartment, including a few previously unknown masterpieces.
Franz Marc (1880-1916)
The gouache "Landschaft mit Pferden" (Horses in Landscape) by German artist Franz Marc is one of 11 previously unknown works shown at the press conference in Augsburg.
Otto Dix (1891-1969)
A self portrait that was previously unknown and has not yet been published in a catalog of works anywhere else. It was probably painted around 1919. It is thus considered one of the few works that Dix created just after the First World War.
Ersnt Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938)
The woodcut "Melancholisches Mädchen" (Melancholic Girl) - shown here being beamed onto the wall at the press conference in Augsburg - was also discovered in the apartment, located in Munich's northern district of Schwabing. It had previously been on display at the art gallery in Mannheim.
Canaletto (1697-1768)
Not all the works discovered in the treasure trove of paintings were modern art. The investigators and art historian Meike Hoffmann also presented artwork from Italian painter Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) from the 18th century.
Gustave Courbet (1819 - 1877)
The title of this painting is "Village Girl with Goat". The confiscated work was first sold at auction in 1949, according to art historian Meike Hoffmann. It thus became a part of the trove only after the Second World War.
Max Liebermann (1847 - 1935)
"Zwei Reiter am Strande" (Two Horsemen at the Beach). More drawings and sketches from Liebermann were also found in the Munich collection.
