A milestone for the European Union - The Lisbon Reform Treaty came into force at midnight

Janine RabeDecember 1, 2009

A big day for the European Union - the Lisbon Reform Treaty came into force at midnight. The treaty streamlines the decision-making process and gives the EU parliament more rights. It has also created two new posts - that of president and foreign policy chief - who will represent the European Union on the international stage. Official celebrations to mark the event will place on Tuesday evening in the city where the reforms were enshrined: the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.
