Which values drive Angela Merkel? (E04)

Nina Haase
January 6, 2021

In this episode, Margot Kässmann tells host Michaela Küfner about an important piece of advice she received from the German Chancellor, when Kässmann became the first woman Leader of Germany's Protestant Church. The Covid-19 pandemic puts Merkel's religious roots on display, says Kässmann. But which values drive Merkel? And does she always stand by her principles? Margot Kässmann doesn't think so.

Margot Kässmann is a moral authority in Germany and beyond: She was the first woman Leader of the Protestant Church in Germany between 2009 and 2010. She has earned a reputation of calling out clashes of values and reality in politics.

Kässmann talks to Michaela Küfner about what drives Angela Merkel when she takes profound policy decisions like shutting down German society during the Covid-19 pandemic. Is she really driven purely by her strong values, or is Merkel at times just better at glossing over the compromises she makes?
