Luther and the Chemicals Industry

Both Wittenberg and the Protestant churches are coming up to a big anniversary in 2017: On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg. This event is seen as the beginning of the Reformation and sparked a worldwide movement that permanently affected people not only in Germany but also in many parts of the world.

Martin Luther formulated his famous reform theses in the eastern Germany city of Wittenberg in 1517. Legend has it that he nailed them to the door of the castle church. Preparations for the prestigious 500th anniversary in 2017 of the Protestant Reformation are already underway. But hardly more than 10 per cent of Wittenberg residents consider themselves Christian today. During the Communist era, the region became the center of East Germany’s chemical industry. And Luther’s town was almost renamed "The City of Chemicals”.
