Murderous Syndicates - The Rise of the Mafia

They occupy key positions in regional and municipal governments, in federal ministries, and in stock exchanges in Milan, Frankfurt, London and New York City.  Revenues from illegal activities of all kinds reach an estimated hundred billion euros annually.  These gangs have a stranglehold on entire industries, major cargo transport hubs, and the gastronomy and tourism sectors in many parts of Italy.  They challenge the state’s authority with ever bolder use of arms and bombing attacks. 

Who are the people behind the mafia?  Who are Campania’s Camorra, Calabria’s Ndrangheta and Sicily’s Cosa Nostra?  How did they originate?  Why does no one outside of Italy seem to comprehend the political threat posed by the globally expanding southern Italian mafia gangs?  And why do many politicians persist in classifying them exclusively as a law enforcement issue – as “organized crime”?
