Downton Abbey has focused national attention on the fate of some of the UK’s stately homes. The mounting cost of repairing and restoring some of these ancestral piles, plus the declining fortunes of the families that live in them, has left dozens of old country mansions at risk. Stephen Beard has been on a tour of one of them – Milton Manor, which stands in parkland a few miles south of Oxford.
