The German women's national volleyball team ended the volleyball World Cup in Trieste, Italy on a high note, beating Azerbaijan in straight sets (25:15, 25:23, 25:19) on Sunday in the final match of the second group round.

Despite the win, Germany's balance of two wins and five losses in the second group stage was not good enough to see them advance to the next round.

"Today we saw the real German team," said Germany's head coach Giovanni Guidetti. "We showed great fighting spirit. This is the main characteristic of my team. The girls did not fight in every match but today they did."

Including the first round of the tournament, Germany only managed four wins from nine total matches. The wins – against Argentina, Tunisia, Belgium and Azerbaijan – all came against teams ranked significantly lower than Guidetti's squad, which had been tipped to compete for a medal after finishing second in last year's European Championship.

Germany finished the World Cup in ninth place.
