Egon Bahr, the Shuttle Diplomat

Egon Bahr, known as one of the architects behind West Germany's "Ostpolitik," has died aged 93. His work was essential for the rapprochement between East and West Germany and Eastern Europe starting in 1969.

One gets the impression that people like Egon Bahr no longer exist in German politics. He seems like an extinct "species," a true "homo politicus:" open to other people’s opinions, with clear convictions, a patriot who never tailored his views to fit the survey results. He never confused his political visions with power games, nor angled for attractive offers from business. Our report sets out in search of the "secret" of Egon Bahr the politician and the man, following the career of this extremely enterprising "puppet master." Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger talk impressively about Bahr’s historical importance on the world stage and how "global players" deal with each other.
